Project ALR & Our Farmland

We need immediate action to protect our farmland from Speculators. Council is covering  up most of fertile farmland in BC with mega mansions. Taking entire farm out of production which only benefit wealthy investors and farmland owners who make millions. Its time to responds to the wholesale destruction of farmland as if food security and the need for a farming future truly was important

The Issue:

Richmond City Council is complicit in this destruction, allowing mansions of almost 11,000 square feet to be built on Class one agricultural land, and also allowing a 3,200 square foot additional house for the “help” on larger properties.

Taking the entire farm out of production only benefits wealthy investors and farmland owners who make millions. Council negligence is covering up most of fertile farmland in BC with mega mansions.

The supposedly protected “Class 1” agricultural land is being carved up for short profit developer gain, exempt from foreign buyer’s tax, and getting property tax breaks by producing a rock bottom minimal “profit” on the land. Loopholes ALR Act has turned farmland into Residential Cash Cow.

The Solution:

  • Keep speculators off our farmland; enact by-law to reduce from the current 10,764 square feet to about 3600 square feet on larger parcels to the provincial maximum
  • Petition the Provincial Government to create a legally binding house size standard across Municipalities. Residential House on the ALR Farmland, should be more in line with nearby residential properties
  • The wholesale destruction of the best farmland in Canada has morphed into a get rich quick scheme for exploiting tax loopholes for the super-rich, and making multi-million dollar profit for the estate developers.
  • We need immediate action to protect our farmland from Speculators.
